    Roulette odds and house edge

European (single zero)House edge 2.70% on every bet
American (double zero)House edge 5.26%; the five-number bet is 7.89%
French, la partage1.35% on even-money bets
Typical pace (estimate)Around 40 spins an hour at a live table; much faster online
Average cost per hour at $5.00 a bet$5.40 ($200.00 wagered)

On a European wheel every bet carries the same 2.70% edge: red or black, dozens or a single number. What changes between bets is the volatility. A single number wins 1 time in 37 and pays 35 to 1; red wins almost half the time and pays 1 to 1. Pick "single number" in the calculator to see how much wider the swings get.

The zero is where the edge comes from. A double-zero American wheel doubles the edge to 5.26%, and its five-number bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3) is worse still at 7.89%.

Martingale (doubling your bet after each loss) feels safe because you win small amounts often. Sooner or later a losing streak wipes out those wins at once, or runs into the table limit. The average loss doesn't change. Here are the numbers.

Expected loss = bet × bets per hour × hours played × house edge

House edges for table games are exact, worked out from the rules. Slot RTPs vary by game and casino. Bets per hour are estimates, so change them to match how you play. The lucky and unlucky lines are an approximation showing the top and bottom 10% of players.

    FAQ

Which roulette has the best odds?

French roulette with la partage on even-money bets (1.35% edge), then European roulette (2.70%). American roulette (5.26%) costs about twice as much as European.

Can you predict the next number?

No. Past spins have no effect on the next one. "Hot" and "cold" numbers on the display board are just recent history.

Is online roulette the same as live roulette?

The edge is the same, but online and auto roulette spin far faster. More spins per hour means a bigger loss per hour.

Do you take money from casinos?

No. notluck has no casino affiliates and no gambling ads.
